All patients with SAS snore, but not all snorers have SAS. Sleep apnoea is said to be present when the sufferer periodically stops breathing whilst sleeping. Often, it is the partner who first notices it. The sufferer may become aware of sudden nocturnal sleep interruption, but may only notice the daytime effects of the condition, namely excessive daytime tiredness, morning headache, lethargy. SAS is a dangerous condition if untreated that may cause daytime accidents at work or whilst driving due to tiredness. It also can cause serious long-term medical problems such as high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, heart failure, epilepsy etc. if not diagnosed and treated. Once diagnosed by a sleep study, an experienced Consultant Sleep and Respiratory Physician will ensure that you receive the correct advice and treatment needed. In most cases, this condition can be cured completely without the use of surgery or even medication.
