Sleep Studies

A sleep study is a crucial part of any Sleep & Snoring Clinic, because it is the cornerstone of diagnosis.

When presented with the problem of severe snoring, the doctor must decide whether it is likely or even possible that the sufferer may have Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). This is not always easy, and in many cases, cannot be determined by the history and examination alone. It is for this reason that a sleep study is required for most patients: to exclude the possibility of OSA in a patient who presents with severe snoring.

Severe snoring is one problem and OSA is quite another. The two often overlap and there is a large grey area in the middle, but OSA is a much more serious long-term medical problem. If not diagnosed and treated, it can result in the development of long-term serious medical complications, such as: High Blood Pressure, Heart Failure, Strokes, Heart Attacks, Epilepsy etc.

Furthermore, the treatment for plain snoring is quite different to that for SA. For this reason, it is important that the correct diagnosis is made.

A sleep study is simple and painless to carry out. With modern technology, a comprehensive, detailed computerized analysis can be made without a patient even having to come into hospital for the night. The equipment is fitted on to the patient in the evening and returned to SNORE-TECH the next day. All the necessary data is acquired by the system in the comfort and familiarity of your own bed, at home. We find this produces the best results, as people sleep more soundly and more predictably in their own surroundings, rather than in an unfamiliar environment. Whilst the equipment is slightly uncomfortable, it does not impede the normal sleep pattern. A detailed printout and report will then be produced by your doctor and you are informed of the results. Depending on the outcome, you will need to make an appointment to see the relevant Doctor to discuss the next step in treating your problem.

Please be aware that many insurance companies do NOT cover the cost of a sleep study (£600) and you should check with them, if you are insured. In any event, the fees for the sleep study are payable in person, in advance. Those whose insurance does cover sleep studies may then claim this back.

IMPORTANT PRACTICAL INFORMATION:

  1. The last appointment for a sleep study set-up is at 7.15pm latest.
  2. Please wear a t-shirt over which the equipment can be fitted. Once fitted, another shirt, jumper or jacket may be put on over it.
  3. Female patients – please do not wear nail polish. The oxygen and pulse monitor, (fits on the finger) cannot read through it.
  4. Remove the equipment CAREFULLY and place in its return box. Breakages are charged for.
  5. You are fine to drive home, enjoy a normal dinner and have as normal an evening as possible.
