Snoring
Snoring is a common condition which affects at least 30% of the adult population on a regular basis. Historically it has not been taken very seriously by the medical profession, but recently this has changed.
Research has shown that it is a potentially serious problem which may have long-term medical and social consequences. Spouses, partners and others in the household can suffer chronic sleep deprivation, leading to fatigue, annoyance, bad moods and marital disharmony. Snorers may be embarrassed to travel on business or holiday as they fear disturbing others with the noise of their snoring. In more severe cases, the snorer may stop breathing at night which can result in daytime sleepiness and long term health problems (see section on obstructive sleep apnoea)
The usual source of noise in snoring is the soft palate, which vibrates at the back of the throat during breathing. There is now a choice of effective therapies targeting this area.
